Does anyone know if there is a setting to allow display of photos within the e-mail itself? I thought that is usually the way Outlook is designed but in several e-mails I examined, in which someone sent me jpegs, there are framed areas on the page w/ a red X in the upper left-hand corner but no pictures displayed. I only see jpeg files attached.

Thanks Diane. I should have clarified:

In most of my Outlook e-mails, the pictures are embedded in the reading pane (as you suggested). But I see exceptions for a few of them (where they are attached but not displayed). So I guess I really wonder why the inconsistency?

Maybe you addressed that. How do I see if I'm "blocking external content" ?

BTW, I read your article. I also read another posting w/ similar info. When I go to:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

I do not see anything that vaguely resembles OLK*

I only see a couple what look like cookie addresses ...

if you browse into the folder the subfolders are hidden - you need to use shell:cache or the complete url to open the folder so you can see the hidden folders.

In Outlook 2003, the blocked external content settings are in Tools, Options, Security, Change Automatic Download Settings.

Attachments won't autodisplay - you need to select them. If they are supposed to be embedded and haven't rendered into the message, there is some corruption in the message and outlook can't match the picture to the image placeholder.

Ah-hah, Diane - you may have just enlightened me w/ one of your comments:

"Attachments won't autodisplay - you need to select them."

I'm not sure I ever realized this but I believe you are saying that an Outlook user can send a picture in one of 2 ways:

• As attachments or

• Directly embedded in the message (a feature I like but is not readily available in OE).

Assuming it might help, I have prepared a rendition of the problematic e-mail I'm describing (attached). Actually, I think it represents a combination of the above 2 bullets: the picture is attached and it's embedded. However, as you will see, the embedded image appears empty w/ only a red X in the upper left-hand corner.

I still do not find the OLK* in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

And I have Show Hidden Files & Folders in Folder Options (Explorer).

Turning to your other comment (blocked external content settings), all options are checked (see attached).

If the sample email inserts the image with code like < img src="http://my server/name.jpg" > then the 'don't download' setting will keep the image from displaying. You'll see this most often with advertising, rarely from individual users. The infobar will tell you there is blocked content.

Get the path from the registry - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security

Value: OutlookSecureTempFolder

and paste it into the windows explorer to open the folder and see if it's 'full'.

Firstly, I'm very familiar with the kind of display you presented in bec.png. In the example I presented, there is no such thing nor is there anything like < img src="http://my server/name.jpg"

In another post I stumbled onto, I had seen the suggestion to check the the registry - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security via regedit. The good news is that, by doing this, I do get this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK17\

However, when I go into explorer to this point:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

there is no \OLK17 !!!

There is only what appears to be a series of files, including a couple cookies (addresses).

I'll see if i can find a virtual machine with XP installed and get the exact steps to view the folder contents - I know its kind of tricky because Microsoft wants to hide them from you, but I thought having the complete path to the folder worked. It's been so long since I looked in that folder on XP that I need to refresh my memory on it.
