(Shared Folders) Using the preview pane to open and close a fax, without opening the email itself.

Usually, we do this to screen the incoming fax, leaving the email itself unopened. That way, if it is a fax that is not for us, we can leave the email unopened in the folder for someone else. Occasionally we forget and open the email first, and then we have to mark it as unread if we are not taking it. My question though is why occasionally the text fields of one email in the shared box will turn red? Is there a way to turn it back to the bold black/unopened look?
