I use Outlook 2016 to access Yahoo email, using POP3.
Recently Yahoo tells me this is a "less secure logon".
If I change the Yahoo setting to not use less-secure, then Outlook -- POP will not connect to yahoo email.

I was planning to try Yahoo -- Outlook -- IMAP. (instead of POP).

But based on the articles I have seen,...it sounds like Yahoo will not let Outlook use either POP or IMAP.
Is that correct ?
Reference-- App access and security | Yahoo Help - SLN27791

I have to assume that Microsoft Outlook 2016 is quite secure.

Is Yahoo saying ...do not use Outlook... ?

What "Windows desktop client" should we use ?

Thanks

it's misleading. :) What that means is that it's using older authorization scheme (for logging in), the new scheme is oauth v2. Depending on who you believe, the older version is more secure in some ways than OAuth2. You'll still use SSL once logged in - so mail will be protected the same either way. (It's secure enough for me to use with my Gmail.)

I don't know if the windows 10 mail app supports oauth2... but many desktop clients do not support it at this time.

BTW, if you enable multifactor authentication, it should work with the more secure setting - you'll need to use an app password in Outlook though.

Thanks for the information. That helps.

--- I will try multi-factor auth. (not sure I know what "app password in Outlook" refers to; but I will find out...)

--- I wonder if Microsoft will add OAuth2 to Outlook desktop client ...

--- I suppose if people stop using Outlook desktop, and just use the Yahoo mail web client, they keep "important old emails" in the Yahoo mailbox in the cloud. (rather than in a PST file on the home computer). Of course one wonders about privacy and security. Could "someone" harvest private medical, financial, etc. info from items stored in a mailbox in the cloud ? (Yahoo or other systems as well).

Thanks again.

Follow-up--
Turned on multi-factor authentication (On the Account settings screen, Yahoo calls this two-step verification).
Then I could disable --allow apps that use less secure sign in--.
Then, in the Yahoo Account area, used Manage app passwords, to generate a password for Outlook Desktop.
Used that when Outlook 2016 popped-up the sign-on box.
BTW, in Yahoo, when I look at the app passwords, it says "Outlook Android", for the "Outlook Desktop" item. I guess it is just a typo. I verified I was using the correct one...

I also changed from POP to IMAP (with the hopes of better email sync).

I also read the slipstick thread here---
What you need to know about IMAP Accounts in Outlook 2013/2016

After reading some of that conversation, ...and my own experience,...
Wow... what a mess... Sure feels like "they" do not want me to use Outlook 2016 for Yahoo mail.

Thanks for our help.

Do I understand this correctly? Having used outlook on my pc, and the android email on my phone, suddenly, that doesn't work. I must either chose to have a special password for outlook, and for my android email, which I can't possibly remember. Alternatively, I can get a text message to my phone each time I want to use it to send emails from my phone? And if I lose my phone, I'm forever locked out of my account. Nuts. My PC outlook suddenly became unable to log in to the server. I was told to generate, and change, on my pc, and my phone, the password. I did this. I can now receive emails. However, when the failure first occurred, I tried to send a test email from outlook, using the old password. It is now stuck in the outbox, and blocking me sending emails from Outlook. Can't delete it. Can't access it or edit it. "Outlook has started transmitting this message". It then fails to send, remaining in my outbox, blocking everything else, presumably because it was created using the old password, before yahoo kindly introduced "two step verification" or "app passwords" etc. It can't log in to the server. Solution? How to get rid of the stuck email in the outbox? I've tried everything.
Thanks.

Only if you enable two-factor authentication.... and there is a recovery password you are given (at least outlook.com gives them out - not sure about yahoo or gmail) - if you lose it and the phone, then yeah, you'll have a harder time recovering the account. You should be able to turn it off if you really don't like it - but the mail providers prefer you use it, because it is more secure.

You should be able to delete the stuck message from the mailbox - set outlook to offline then restart it (or wait a bit) when you get the message about being transmitted.
