I've just built a new PC and have installed Office 2010 which includes Outlook 2010 14.0.7263.5000.

I installed the Hotmail Outlook Connector 14.0.6123.5001 but it will not work at all. In the Send/Receive window, it reports the following:


Task 'Hotmail - Sending' reported error (0x80040126) : 'The operation cannot be performed because the connection to the server is offline.'
Task 'Hotmail' reported error (0x80004005) : 'Network operation failed'
Task 'Hotmail' reported error (0x8004102A) : 'Error with Send/Receive. There was an error synchronizing your folder hierarchy. Error : 80041004


I have a laptop with the same installation and have no issues sending/receiving emails from my Hotmail email -- why does this not work on a new installation? All settings on my new PC are identical to the setup of my laptop.

The hotmail connector is dead - it no longer works with outlook.com as outlook.com is on office 365 exchange servers now. Use autoaccount setup to add the account as an exchange account. You need to have all updates installed to use outlook 2010.

Are you actually using the connector there or is the account set up as an exchange account?

Uninstall the connector, check for updates then try again.

Many thanks for your reply. I have not posted for a long time, for quite a number of years, I don't run into that many problems -- that said, I would like to congratulate you on the work you do on this site and the help you offer.

I did read a while back that the Hotmail Connector is no longer supported and I might of even read that new installations of the software will no longer work, that could be wrong, not sure on that, maybe I'll do some 'googling'.

Auto-setup in Outlook of my Hotmail account works ok. Outlook sets the account up as an exchange server' account.

The Connector software only asks for my name, email address. and password. That's it, doesn't ask for any other info. It is setup identical to Outlook on my laptop. So why it's not working beats me.

I have a sneaky suspicion that new installations past a certain date, the Connector will not work. I have noticed that Microsoft have removed the ability to edit POP3/IMAP settings when I log into web based Outlook.com

I have tried to 'repair' the Connector software in the Programs/Features and also have uninstalled and reinstalled several time -- just won't work.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to reply and if I find a solution or get this to work I'll get right back to you with an update.

The connector was needed for the old hotmail/outlook.com server to sync calendar & contacts. With the move to office 365 servers, it is not needed - outlook has sync ability built in.

New installs of office 2010 seem to want to use the connector - possibly because all updates are not yet installed. Make sure all updates are installed and uninstall the connector (if you installed it) then reboot and try adding the account again.

SOLVED!

As you correctly mentioned, the Outlook Connector no longer works due to the way in which it communicates with the server.

Hotmail is working on my laptop NOT because of the Outlook Connector software but because of the manual way the account is setup. I have now uninstalled the Outlook Connector on my laptop.

This website below shows how to setup Outlook to work with Hotmail.

Scroll down to "How to add your e-mail account to Outlook 2010"

The only change needed is to change the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Server

Change the Incoming Mail Server from 'imap.mail.com' to 'imap-mail.outlook.com'

Also change the Outgoing Mail Server from 'smtp.mail.com' to 'smtp-mail.outlook.com'
