Hi - just started (maybe after a new router - that could be a red herring though).
Using Outlook on the desktop [Microsoft® Outlook® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2404 Build 16.0.17531.20140) 64-bit ] and have a long standing Hotmail account that shows in there.
Suddenly getting messages about Certificate when sending - 'Security Alert ... outlook.office365.com... problem with the site's security certificate...the name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site" and options are Yes/No/View Cert. Looking at the cert it was issued to cloudflare-dns.com.
Not sure what to do safety-wise?
Thanks.

Going to that site rolls to 1.1.1.1 â the Internetâs Fastest, Privacy-First DNS Resolver

That looks like your router or your ISP is routing traffic through cloudflare. VPN or proxy server can do it too - or a PUP (potentially unwanted program). While it is probably safe, I would want to know what is doing it and probably disable it.

At one point with spectrum (maybe it was TW, pre-spectrum) had a "safe browsing" option that filtered websites through their servers - I turned that off as soon as I figured out it was doing that.

If a VPN is doing it, I personally would stop using it - but I'm not a big fan of VPNs for general use. You're just changing who is tracking and monitoring your traffic.

This is cloudfare's DNS -

As for using DNS other than your ISPs server that in itself is not bad, but you don't want traffic filtered. I use google's - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 - they might be the Evil Empire :) but I've never had issues with outdated DNS with them.

Hi Diane
(as first time I have corresponded directly, I'm afraid I'm going to have to Gush to make you Blush - you seem to have been around forever (we need to check your attic for a possible decaying painting... ; o) and I remember your site and advice getting me out of many scrapes when I was thrashing around in the early days of working with Msft SBS and the built-in Exchange. People with tech experience who can use the minimum number of words and express them with the greatest clarity help users the world over more than they know, so a big Thank You. Over and out).

So this is an 'emergency' basic router I wheeled out from my ISP when the line connection (copper then fibre to the exchange) started having huge dropouts - I usually use a Draytek but they like to blame User Equipment if they can, so reverted to their standard stuff.

According to the router it is using 212.x.x.x. for DNS (incredibly slow - just done a Tracert) but on the other hand I see that the hardware Firewall defaults to On "Allow all outgoing connections and block all unsolicited incoming traffic. Games and application sharing is allowed." - so I wonder if somehow traffic is routed first via a third party e.g. Cloudflare?? Not very well up with all this stuff.

What is weird is that the Outlook cert thing (which I assume is linked with the Outlook prog itself on the Win10 PC as opposed to some internal mail thing going on behind the scenes) is intermittent e.g. just received into and replied from my @hotmail.com from within Outlook desktop no probs at all. Yet at other times of day...

Shall report back when I switch router back to see if issue goes.
Thanks again

Yeah, they all do it.

That is what it appears they are doing. Quite possible that is why it is slow. It's also possible they are using a proxy and filtering it via cloudflare.

Can you change the DNS to google's and see if it is faster.

s intermittent e.g. just received into and replied from my @hotmail.com from within Outlook desktop no probs at all. Yet at other times of day...
If you click Yes to allow the certificate, it should work until you restart outlook.

Thanks - annoyingly the DNS seems hard coded into (their) router. Given the line people seem to have fixed the dropouts behind the scenes, just waiting for Senior Guy/Gal to come on Monday and close job, then I shall revert back to my Draytek router.
Weirdly, after many of those Cloudflare certificate dialog boxes, not had any for last 18 hours... hate intermittent stuff like that!
Have a great Sunday.

Update - have not changed router back yet (still DSL issues) but the cloudflare certificate thing seems to (intermittently) occur with full Acrobat Pro also. So, not Outlook specific.
