Renaming or moving contents of a field

Hello there,

(unfortunately) some time ago we started to use the 'Initiated By' field, a default from Leads.

Now, it's obvious that this field is named wrong for our use and it would be much more convenient if this was called 'managed by'

being a default field I cannot simply rename it, but is there a more complex way of renaming it.

If not, is there a way of moving the data into a new custom field?

Obviously, the MOST important thing is that i don't want to lose any data.
