I am using Outlook 2010 and IMAP with Compuserve/AOL Mail and with GMail. In Outlook, I can set options for each folder to archive or delete after a certain period of time. Does that get communicated to the server folders and which takes precedence?

A little off forum, but as far as the mail folders in AOL or GMail. Does anyone know if there is a limit to email storage, and how long do messages stay on server for Inbox, Sent, Trash, or a folder I may create? Or can you point me in the right direction where I can find out?

I guess overall, I am trying to figure out the best way to interface Outlook with these email servers and come up with a sensible email automatic delete policy so the folders do not get too large.

Thanks!

Yes, it gets communicated with the server but they aren't deleted until you purge unless you set outlook to purge automatically.

the mail will stay online until you delete it or the mailbox gets full. I don't know what their limits ae though.

How much mail do you have? You can move it to a local pst file for long term storage - outlook 2010 can easily handle 5 GB without issue. (It can handle more, but performance might be affected.)

Thanks. So by purge, I assume, under properties for each folder in autoarchive tab to select auto delete etc. Trying to avoid archiving large amounts. But I do not have that much. If an email is important I will drag it into a my docs folder.

But I guess if I set autodelete for 60 days and the server has it for 30 days, the server will win? Do you knwo of a good tutorial anywhere on all of this?

Thanks!

purge is not autoarchive and autoarchive doesn't work well with imap. If you set the server to delete after 30 days, it will be removed from outlook when its removed from the server.

Purge is what you need to do to remove items marked for deletion in imap accounts. File, Account Settings, double click on the imap account then More Settings - look on the Deleted tab.
