How to create fields that will use the same value on different record types

Hi, On BCM 2010, does anyone know how to use/create a field on a account record type, and have the value of that field display on a contact record type form? I think this is called a parental relationship field.

For example, I'd like to create a contract renewal field in my account record and then display the value of that field in all the contacts that are linked to the account record. The point being that I only have to enter / update the contract renewal information in one place and be able to view that information in the contact form for all contacts that are linked to that account. Thanks

I have only learned that this apparently requires a custom solution using a database query. I'm not sure how to do that or if it is feasible for my use case, though. Sorry, I don't have additional details. If you figure it out, please share. Thanks!
