Does changing the password to access your IMAP account on web mail but then inadvertently using the old one on your laptop to contact the server result in all your e mails disappearing off your laptop (as if you'd deleted your account)?
Thx for responding! The real reason I'm asking is in fact someone had set up my e mail account on their laptop and was accessing my e mail account without my permission. When I found out I changed my password so they couldnt access it again and I had hoped because it was IMAP that all the mails they had already received would just disappear but it sounds like they will still have them (obviously they won't get new ones)?
Correct, they won't get new mail, but any old mail they read is definitely still downloaded. Depending on their outlook version and configuration, they might only have headers of mail they haven't yet read.
I'm a bit confused then about how IMAP works. I thought it didn't actually download mail, it served as a mirror to the server so if it downloads them where does it store the mails on the laptop?
And I have been told it erases all trace of mails on a laptop if you remove the address from the laptop - is this true and how does that happen? Can any e mails be found deep inside the laptop with forensic analysis or do they just completely vanish?
