Exchange setup not possible with outlook.de username

I'm trying to add an already migrated Outlook.com account as an Exchange account to Mac OS 10.11.

However, this only seems to work when I use an alias with a DOT COM domain like @outlook.com.

When I try to use an @outlook.de or @live.de domain to setup the very same account, it brings up the following SSL certificate error:

There's an option to "always trust" the hostname certificate. But this doesn't seem to work either as I get another error message:

Has anyone been able to successfully use an @outlook.de username to setup Outlook.com as an Exchange account on a Mac?

I can get it to work by simply creating an @outlook.com alias for my account - but this surely looks like a more general problem to me...
