Changing the name of Outlook Messages saved to a folder

Diane,

I wonder if you could help with a problem I am experiencing at work? I work for a large company and we all get inundated with work related emails all day every day. My colleagues save up their emails and then move them en-mass to folder(s) on a server.

I try as best as I can to date and number these emails so that there is some semblance of order, however, my colleagues don't help as they do not do this and I am becoming a little frustrated with them.

Ideally I would like to be able to automate the renaming of these emails so that the title is preceded by the date in the following format YYMMDD – N. The N denotes a number i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, etc dependent on the number of emails received on that specific date. I have tried doing this manually, but every time I go back to the folded in question someone else has copied their emails to the folder. Please note that some of the outlook messages may have already been changed.

Outlook version 2010.

I think it's a lot easier to do this using an outlook macro as the messages are saved.... but you should be able to do this using the windows scripting host... as long as the file date is correct. If you need to open the message to get the sent date, it will be slower.

Do you use the same folder always? If the folder doesn't change, a macro in outlook to save the messages would be easier for all. See How to Save Email in Windows File System for links to a macro and also 3rd party utilities that might be a good investment for your company.
