Hi,

Okay this is funny...... I just sat here and sat up a rule in a CLEAN COPY of Outlook 2016... Just sat up when I made my first post earlier.

I just made a rule that if a email is addressed to OutlookForums@CWM030.com

Then categorize as ARCHIVE INBOX 2018

Then categorize as OUTLOOK FORUMS

Then move to folder FORUMS > Outlook

I just checked and the rule is gone, like I never created it?
Any help is welcomed!

Thanks,
Chris

This is in an imap account? Do you have more than one data file and did you change which one is default? (POP & IMAP rules are stored in the default data file.)

IMAP doesn't support categories, so I'm kind of surprised it let you set those fields, although Outlook isn't smart enough to know until after the rule is created.

FWIW, i created a similar rule (only set one category) and the rule did not disappear.

Hello Diane,

Yes, IMAP account
No other data file... Brand new MS Office installed last night.
Odd yours didn't disappear....
Darn so only POP or Exchange allows categories?

Darn so only POP or Exchange allows categories?
Yeah, more or less. You can make them work with IMAP but many times (depends on your imap server), the categories won't be synced back to the server and down to other computers - they are shown only on the computer where you set the category. If you delete the imap data file and let outlook resync, you will likely lose the categories.

The rule i tried set the category - or you can use a macro to set a category, but once the category is set, you can change or add additional categories.

Darn it..... oh well back to the old way of searching for emails.

Thanks

Test it and see if the categories sync back to the server - if they synced back in t-bird, they might in Outlook too. If they do, you can use categories - you can use categories even if they don't sync back, but the experience might not be as good.

UPDATE:

The rules are now sticking........ I guess OL didn't like I added that category rule in ( since i'm using IMAP ) so OL decided to kick the rule out from being saved.

Just setting up rules to move emails to certain folders, rules are now being saved and ran like they should be at mail check.

I wonder if this is just a fluke / bug in OL 2016?

( picture below )

Thanks,
Chris

I'm thinking fluke... try a simple rule that just adds one category. Does it stick? (I tested my rule on a gmail imap account.)
