Outlook 2007 crash linked to gdiplus.dll

I've been using Outlook 2007 for years (in a Windows 7 environment) and today, for the first time, the system generated the following error when it launched:

A message on the screen said that Outlook was incompatible with gdiplus.dll and I should re-install.

I fired up Outlook again and it started normally.

A Google search isn't yielding much by way of results and I'm wondering whether this is an Outlook or Windows problem. Any ideas?
