In Outlook 2010, we'd like to be able to properly format inline comments in an HTML reply. I've enabled the stationary and font settings. As such I now get a default font/color for the reply and my name correctly precedes the comment. However, the font style of the comment matches the font style of the the original message. It ignores what is set in the stationary settings. The color changes correctly, but not the font and size. We could do this in 2007. I am not using any themes.

Testing Steps:

1. Sent myself a message with font style like Algerian 24pt. Something that is obviously different than my Calibri 11 default in stationary.

2. Reply to the message.

3. I see my Calibri text in the message body, but when I edit the original message text, the inline comment turns to Algerian 24. Basically ignoring my settings.

Thoughts? I've found nothing on-line to address this. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure it worked like that in Outlook 2007? I don't remember it doing that - I remember it picking up the format of the message. (If i can find a machine with Outlook 2007 still installed, I'll check my memory. )

I'm reasearching this for one of our power users. He swears he used this every day. He has to review and comment a lot for the stuff he does. So it's a big time waster for him to reformat it all. Really appreciate you looking into it a little more.

It's working as you describe on my test machines.

What is the font settings in Tools, options, mail format, stationery and fonts?

They are set as HTML messages. No themes are set. The reply font is set to Verdana as is the "mark comments with" option in stationery section. At first I thought it was working correctly too. But that was because I was sending messages to myself and the base fonts were the same. To really test, I then picked a very obnoxious font for the original message and then attempted the reply. It became unfortunately clear that the reply message header was in the correct font, but the inline comments were not. The inline comments utilized the same formatting as the source message. The specified comment mark and color worked, but not the font formatting.

It tested with messages in a test mailbox that came from outside - mailing lists and newsletters. I didn't go quite obnoxious, but picked a font that was easy to see was not the standard fonts.

In that screenshot I'm replying to a newsletter my website sends out- it uses CSS in the paragraph code. If I don't press enter my name is not inserted and the text uses the default for the paragraph.

If I use a message that adds my name within a sentence, then it uses the paragraph's CSS:

I'm guessing that is what Larry remembers.

I haven't tested this is Outlook 2010 yet - I wanted to refresh my memory on how it worked in 2007. Outlook 2010 should work the exact same way - Enter will cause it to use your font, just typing inline uses the paragraph font.
