How to Sort by Unread and then Read mail in Outlook 2007

In Outlook 2007 on exchange server, I want messages sorted so that the unread

ones are at the top of the list and read ones after that. Within each group

of unread and read messages, I want them sorted by date-newest first. I can

add the read field with Field Chooser, but cannot sort by it - when clicking

on the icon I get a " You cannot sort by this field" message.

I know how to use the search folder to list unread messages or the Current

view box on the Advanced toolbar. But I want the entire message list, not

just the unread ones.

You cannot group by date and by Read and you cannot sort by Read. In short, I

don't think you can get what you want, which appears to be grouped by date and

then by Read.

I wonder why this is not a valid way of sorting messages as it is extremely

useful if you want to sort by date in ascending order but still keep your

unread emails at the top of the list. I sure hope Microsoft plans on adding

this ability as I know several people who would prefer to sort that way. If

there is an issue with sorting by read/unread status then there should at

least be an option to keep unread email at the top regardless of your sorting.

How is this not a feature?

The data is recorded somewhere as we can see columns for read but the UI

isn't capable of doing this sort. Being a developer I'm sure there is a

logical programmatic reason as UI people took the time to say "hey, this

isn't possible"

By why?

You have an Unread message folder already.

After reading this thread and getting frustrated (there isn't an Unread messages folder in Outlook 2007). I went to View > Current View and selected "Unread Messages in this folder". That gave me the 4 unread messages I have been trying to track down (including one very old one). I hope this helps others. :D

There is an unread search folder - if its not in the Search folder, you can make a new search folder. (It's a predefined search folder).

To choose a different starting folder in Outlook, go to Tools, Options, and select the Other tab. Then click theAdvanced button under the General section. In the Advanced Options window, click the Browse button to access the menu of Outlook folders. You can choose from any Outlook folder, including ones you have created. To select the To Do list, scroll to the very top of the list, select it and click OK.
