Outlook 2010 Changed "Recover Deleted Items" Behavior

I've been using Outlook 2010 for a couple of months now and as an administrator I've run across one vexing problem. In past versions of Outlook with Exchange Server, you could create and enable the DumpsterAlwaysOn registry item and recover deleted items from any folder, including the folders of secondary mailboxes you've added to your profile.

I just tried to do the same thing in Outlook 2010, adding a mailbox to my Exchange profile under Account Settings --> More Settings --> Advanced. When I go to any of the folders in this attached mailbox, the "Recover Deleted Items" button is grayed out in the Folder ribbon. However, it is available in all of the folders in my primary email.

Has anyone else run into this issue or does anyone have a solution? I use this feature frequently and would be extremely dissappointed to lose it in Outlook 2010.

Environment

Exchange Server 2003 SP2

My workstation:

Windows 7 Professional x64

Office 2010 Professional Plus x32

Thanks in advance.

I had forgotten all about this until I stumbled across this problem again today and I decided to see if there was anything new on it. Does anyone have any clues to why this has changed and how to get around it?

No, there is not fix for it at this time. We need to wait for an update that fixes it - I'm not sure if it will be in Sp1 (due out soon) or in a later update.

Hi Everyone,

I am having the same issue, and my Exchange is 2010 SP1 (Version: 14.01.0270.001) and my outlook is 14.0.5128.5000. Has anyone been able to resolve this issue? I can see the Recover Deleted Items hilighted for my own recycle Bin, but when I try it on another users mailbox that I have Full access to, it is greyed out. Need to find if there is a way around this in outloook or Exchange.

Thanks

Chris Weir

No change yet - but sp1 should be out soon. I can't recall if they told me this would be fixed in it or in a later patch though.

I don't know if this will help any one. But after doing a little searching I found (http://www.addictivetips.com/microsoft-office/outlook-2010-recover-deleted-emails/) basically the same as it was for XP and earlier versions of outlook.

With running a 64 bit OS and a 32 bit office the reg settings need to be added in a bit diffrent place under win6432 as below.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options]

"DumpsterAlwaysOn"=dword:00000001

I have this set and it is working.

If your are using 32 OS and 32 Office or 64 OS and 64 Office you would use.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options]

"DumpsterAlwaysOn"=dword:00000001

Dumpsteralwayson is enabled by default in Outlook 2007 and 2010 for all folders in the mailbox. It's only needed to recover items deleted from secondary accounts and public folders in the Exchange profile. http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/recovering-deleted-items-in-outlook/

Also note that the article you posted is wrong - you can only recover deleted items from exchange server, not from pst files. If a POP3 account is delivered to an exchange mailbox you could recover POP3 mail (because its stored in Exchange), but its not recommened that users deliver POP3 mail to their corporate exchange mailbox.

It was fixed in an update that was released long after the thread was started. (It was either in SP1 (July 2011) or an update released soon after.)
