Outlook 2007 Running on Windows 7 hangs on send

I have 3 Laptops running Windows 7 64bit Pro, the only 3 Windows 7 machines on my network. They are running Outlook 2007 and both Windows and Office 2007 are as up-to-data as possible. They used cached mode when away and connect to the Exchange Server in online mode when in the office. It is a Windows network with Active Directory. We use WatchGuard firewall and Kaspersky anti-virus.




Here is the Problem: Outlook works properly other than routinely the status bar shows that it is sending and receiving (which shouldn't happen at all when directly connected to the network) and will hang at a percentage different for each user. It will not show an abnormal use of resources but it does seem to hold the outgoing mail for 5 to 10 minutes. Eventually it gives up, shows connected to Microsoft Exchange and then the outgoing mail delivers.




I have deleted and reinstalled Office, I have deleted the offline pst files and let them rebuild, I have verified that the units can see the Exchange Server both UNC and ping. I have looked over the logs and I can't find anything to lead me in any particular direction. I have been searching here as well as the web and I can't seem to find anything helpful. Any help would be appreciated.
 
So the only accounts in the profile are the Exchange accounts? No subscriptions to sharepoint, rss, internet calendars? They will all kick off send and receives.

Have you checked the connection status? Hold Ctrl, right click on the outlook icon in the tray and choose Connection status. Are you using tcp/ip once connected? If so, try disabling it, if not, enable it and see if the change helps.

Try opening Outlook in Safe mode. Does it work better? (Hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon to start in Safe mode.)

Does it work if you disable the firewall?
 
This might be a duplicate responce because I responded and it didn't show up.




Only the Exchange Account, nothing else that I can detect. The firewall is always off via policy. I haven't tried Safe Mode, but the only user here today I restarted them in Safe Mode and I will check with them later to see how that goes.




I didn't know abou the connection status and frankly I don't know how to read it or how to enable or disable TCP/IP. I will link 2 screen prints that may mean more to you than to me.

Safe Mode didn't seem to make a differance, every 5 minutes or so it sends and recieves and hangs (see Picture)

I went through one more time and verified his settings againts mine. There are a few differances, some are expected because he is a laptop user, the only setting differance that I can see that was questionable was under account properties cached exchage mode settings he has download shared folders... selected where I did not.
 
To change the TCP/IP settings - Tools, Accounmt settings, double click on the account and then More Settings - connection tab, Exchange proxy settings. Remove the checkmark from the TCP/IP options and see if it helps. (The default setting is for slow networks to use tcp/ip. if the setting is checked for fast netowrks too, try disabling only that option.)

I don't know if it matters... but on the second screenshot, it has UDP for notifications. Firewalls can block UDP packets... i don't have a 2003 server to test to see if it only uses UDP so it might not matter. (2007 and 2010 use ASYNC.)

As far as different settings for a laptop user, with Outlook 2007, the settings should be the same if you both use cached mode. Including shared folders in the cache can slow send/receives down, but not prevent the initial connection.

In the connection dialog - first with a computer that works as expected (so you know what to expect) then on a the laptop with problems - click the Reconnect button and watch the results. Do you see any major differences - does the laptop connect fairly quickly or have problems finding the servers?
 
Initially the Outlook Anywhere was unselected and I had never even looked at this before. I selected it and made the selections as suggested. Tested it and unfortunately the symptoms haven't changed. I have been monitoring the traffic from that PC for a few hours now and I don't see anything blocked, I will look at a different tool that looks at the net card itself and not the firewall logs, but I don't think UDP is blocked or it seems to me that it wouldn't work at all.




I did as you suggested and press the reconnect button, watched my PC, and the firewall, and watched his laptop and firewall. Both connected instantaneously and without and blocked messages.




If I had hair left I would be pulling it out at this point.




I still believe that it has something to do with Windows 7, possibly communication differences between 7 and XP, possibly DLL conflicts or maybe Mapi version, but what the hell do I know.
 
If its a win7 issue, it would be security related, not a dll or mapi. While I'm not totally convinced it's the problem, Windows 7 is (annoyingly) more secure. I'm leaning more towards a combination of things - win7, exchange 2003, and outlook coming together in a perfect storm.

Are you using UAC? It's a long shot, but you could try disabling UAC. (User access control - its set in Windows control panel, user accounts)
 
I made sure UAC was off, one of the machines already had the UAC off. I still can't see what is causing the issue, One of the machines I installed a trial version of Outlook 2010 to see if it was something with the version and the problem is still there. The only thing new that I failed to mention is I have to install CDO separately because it is required for another piece of software since they dumped this from Office 2007.




So let's recap to this point.: My Windows 7 Laptop users running Office 2007 in cached mode have a problem where there computers will show send and receive when online and connected to the Exchange 2003 Server get 'stuck' sending. This holds up the actual outgoing emails for a time. Eventually the send and receive will go away and the emails will send. I did get reports that this could last forever and the user has to exit and restart Outlook, but I am not sure if that is a patience issue.




UAC is off


Communications looks good


Software reinstalled


No other RSS feeds or mail accounts that can ‘kick’ off the send/receive functions


Outlook 2010 tried with no difference


No individual Firewall set, global firewall doesn’t show any blocked email activity that I can see.


Logs don’t reveal anything meaningful.


Kaspersky anti-virus uninstalled with no difference.


Hair gone, nerves shot. (Help me Obi Wan you're my only hope)
