I'm guessing that it is a combination of the new defs and a malformed message header in some messages. Keep an eye on it... it's also possible running scanpst did something even though it said no errors found. Or closing and restarting outlook fixed it - years ago, restarting outlook fixed similar issues. (I think it was outlook 2002, but could have been 2000 or 98.)

No, not really. Upgrading rarely fixes problems. If it does, it's usually because something in the upgrade process changed - add-in disabled, new profile, new data file etc. I would not spend money to upgrade in hopes it would fix the problem if I had the software available to me, I would probably try it.
