Hi all,

I am very new to using Outlook 2010 32bit on Windows 7 ultimate. Outlook is setup through IMAP using Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook. I use Outlook for sending/receiving mail, but have also gone into gmail and poked around with the settings a few times.

I am regularly attaching .msg files to my messages and sending these for e-mail approvals and such. The .msg files are text and html e-mails that have been dragged out of my outlook inbox to the desktop and then later dragged back in to an e-mail I am composing. The parties receiving my mails are unable to view these types of attachments regardless of compression (.zip, .rar, standard). Any non .msg attachments are viewed correctly.

I am sending primarily Japanese e-mails as the .msg attachments so I have changed the encoding to UTF-8, but I have not been able to fix the problem yet. I am guessing this is some sort of encoding or settings error as the recipient received the following garbled when viewing my attachment. (image below). When I send the e-mails from the google apps infrastructure (gmail) the .msg attachments are not viewed correctly as well. Gmail is set to Use Unicode (UTF-8) encoding for outgoing messages.

Please let me know what other information I should provide. Thank you.

While I don't think this is your problem, do you know you can drag messages from outlook to messages and skip the desktop step?

It looks like an encoding issue, not font encoding but mime/uuencode. Open messages, File > Properties and check the header - actually, since you use gmail, open the mailbox in a browser and use their Original message command. You should see the internet header and below that, the message in either plain text or HTML. If you see blocks of garbage characters, there should be some lines between the internet header and the garbage that tell you about contents.
