Hi All,

We have a strange filing system :)

basically within a folder there may be several documents, that will start 001-filename.doc, 002-filename.xls etc etc

So when our users save off emails, because they are unsure if there is any other documents there other than emails, they type *.* to see what files are there, then save the email in the next sequence, so 003-filename.msg

I am getting this problem: on quite a few machines

it looks within outlook that the file was saved fine, however when you go back in to look, the file has saved as .htm.msg

Just to clarify, this only happens when typing *.* into the file name box!

I have tried a reinstall, including a removal script, and service pack 3, etc. also tried under a blank profile, and the problem is still there.

O/S is Windows 7 x64

Thanks, Steve.

Looking into this more, all the windows XP users are fine,

I have looked at 4 Win 7x64 machines, and only one can do this, the other 3 all have the same problem,.

i can't repro. Do they type over the entire filename, extension included or do they just edit the filename? It may not matter as it worked correctly either way.

Are they saving the files from Outlook or from OWA?

Saving from outlook 2007 locally. no OWA. tried it with and without service packs.

they get rid of the name, type *.* to see a list of files. find the last file number, and save the new file with msg format specified.

if you look at it and are quick, when it saves you can actually see it add .htm.msg as it saves!

so far im unable to find a solution :(

So they are saving messages, not attachments? I was testing with attachments. I'll try to repro (a quick test just now couldn't, but I also wasn't using the same outlook or windows versions).

Are they selecting and editing the filename? I'm thinking that maybe its something with the autocomplete name remembering the .htm.msg from the previous one and it gets picked up inadvertently. They should type out 002-filename and not use an extension - outlook will assign the extension.

Oh, and are the Windows Explorer settings for show/hide extensions identical on all systems? I've seen weird behavior when extensions were hidden.

Yes, Just saving messages, its possible the messages will have attachments, but not all of them.

They click File, Save As, change type to MSG format, type *.*, find the last file, click on that file to bring up the filename in the box, change the name, and hit save. They dont type a file extension, and it only breaks if the user types *.* into the box beforehand.

At the moment I have instructed one user to type.msg at the end of the filename and this does resolve the problem, but my users are not exactly over-willing to do anything like that, and accept it only as a temporary solution!

Rather like i said why not drag and drop, i was told that was far too hard!
