After months of waiting, my Outlook.com account transitioned over to Exchange, but not in the way I expected.

First, I noticed that emails were disappearing from the Outlook 2013 folders that I had created, then the Junk Mail folder began to fill up.
The server was still Exchange ActiveSync at that stage.
I checked online Outlook.com, and it was NOT showing Outlook Mail heading. That is, not using Exchange.

A day or so later, my emails had disappeared and then all (?) reappeared in their folders. I had begun manually shifting those in Junk to where they should have been. Once stabilized, I had satisfied myself that this was NOT the way that the change-over was supposed to go. This was 27 - early 29 October.
My Hotmail account, also on Exchange ActiveSync, is much less used but the weirdness of disappearing and reappearing emails did not occur.
On the Outlook.com account, send/receive of emails did NOT stop. But I checked later on Saturday 29/10 and found a discrepancy in emails there (Inbox) vs my desktop Outlook, and also found that the online repository was showing that it was using Exchange server.
So I took this as a signal to remove my desktop mail account @ outlook.com, and then reconfigure it. I left Hotmail as it was, unchanged. It is still on Exchange ActiveSync, operating as normal.
Over a period of a day or less, the Outlook.com account filled up and largely with the emails in the correct folders I had used. But my desktop account's Rules were not working, my signature need to be re-established, my Search folders had to be re-made, my favourites chosen again, the Categories colour patches missing, and lastly, each day I have a series of "PersonMetadata" items with a folder icon, no sender or subject, but a common Date/Time about 20 minutes after midnight.
Well, only the PersonMetadata is worrying me. I would like to not have that artefact each day - though they disappear each midnight to be replaced by the next lot - 5 or 6 or a dozen or so of these.
I have fixed most other things, apart from Rules. I have also ignored emails received that arrive with a current date, but were original emails I had received as far back as 2014. Some, like voicemail, have MP3 files that have filenames that reveal the date and time that they were emailed from my phone and email provider (ISP) - so I was not confused for very long to hear messages from 2 years ago.

Hotmail's turn for a make-over today - although it's fine, I will remove the account and remake it, just to see what happens.

Hotmail - well, confusing. The online Hotmail.com emails show the Outlook Mail header, but my desktop account re-established itself with Exchange ActiveSync.

wait a few days then remove the active sync account and use auto account setup to add it back as exchange - there are a lot of issues with EAS and it's not recommended.

PersonMeta shouln't show if the account is in as Exchange.

Do you use a samsung device? we've seen it mark exchange mail as spam.

Outlook.com is definitely on Exchange. Hotmail is not. This is my desktop with Outlook 2013.

I use a Windows Phone (not Samsung device), no problems as far as I know. It is running WP 8.1 (my choice not to upgrade, because of limited memory storage - 8Gb). I don't want to remove the Outlook account on the phone and re-install - too much inter-related and its logon is my Microsoft Account.

The tablet I'm using is an Asus, Windows 10 32-bit - and though it has Office 2013 32-bit, I use Mail rather than having Office Outlook 2013 installed. I don't see problems in Mail. Not anywhere, actually - though it is limited in its abilities, of course.

Back to the desktop, Outlook 2013: I did remove the Outlook.com account, and re-establish it (I think I described that). I will do that again in a couple of weeks - and see if the PersonMetadata is cleaned up.

On Microsoft's "Community" areas, I have read a range of problems with the transition to Exchange, including Sent mail ending up in other folders (Junk?), etc.

Today 11/11/2016 6AM emails from Microsoft advising both accounts (Outlook.com, Hotmail.com) had been transitioned to Exchange Server, and I should re-establish (etc).
Nice to have that.
At 12:11AM, 3 of the PersonMetaData things arrived. It will be interesting to see whether they have ceased now that I have again re-jigged my email accounts.
