Using the Outlook 2019 desktop version as have it as part of Office 2019. (And I'd rather not just use the gmail web interface)

I use gmail as the server to process the sending and receiving of emails but I use aliases as I want to use personal email accounts set up on a web domain that I own.

The receiving of (forwarded) emails works fine (having set up the gmail account on outlook using IMAP/SMTP) but I can't find any way of setting up emails to be sent from outlook with my personal email address rather than my gmail one.

Outlook doesn't seem to have either the concept of identities (that I have used previously in Thunderbird) or additional email addresses associated with an account that Mac Mail has.

I have tried the dummy method described on your website to set up an additional POP account just for sending, but I've not managed to get this to authenticate successfully. (And even if I did I think this would mean I would end up with two different mailboxes - as one would be POP and the other would be IMAP)

Any ideas?

Is gmail handling the sending of the messages or do you send them using a different mail server?

You have two options -

1. Click on the From button (show it on the Options tab, if its not visible) - click on other email address and type in the alias. Depending on how and where the alias is set up, this might work without adding 'on behalf of' and showing both the account address and the alias.

2. Create pop accounts - each can use the same pst file as the 'delivery' location, but you will disable incoming mail in send/receive settings. Select the account to send from it. If you have it set up to send through Gmail, you'll need to use 2-step auth and an app password in outlook.

Dianne,

Gmail is handling the sending of the messages.

But I have done option 2 and yes that does seem to work - hooray!!
(Although why Outlook forces me through these setup hoops to do this ...)

The only issue I still have is that when composing replies to emails sent to the aliased accounts they don't automatically populate with the correct address and i have to manually change from the default gmail one.
Still trying to work out why this is so...

Tony

That

is normal, since the message arrived in gmail. I have a macro that will switch the address.

According to that article, using the Other email address field should work... it's been a while since I tested it and its possible newer versions of outlook habndle that differently. Time to test again. :)

Dianne,

Thanks - I'll try putting that macro in.

Although why Outlook can't just reply to the correct email address straight out of the box as Apple Mail, Gmail or Thunderbird manage to do I don't know!

Tony

Outlook replies using the account that downloaded the message - which is google. If the accounts download the messages, outlook will use the right address.

Dianne,

That macro seems to work fine in Outlook 2019 - many thanks.

You're quite right in that Outlook is just being logical in using the account that actually downloaded the messages, but most other email systems have the concept of using alternate emails or identities which allow this selection of the reply to email to happen automatically based on the TO address.
I'm sure Outlook has a good reason for not allowing this but it certainly is a quirk that anyone migrating from other systems will find puzzling!

Thanks again,

Tony
