According to this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/197172

Outlook considers anything with 3 letters and a colon a prefix in the subject line and will replace it on a reply or forward with RE: or FWD:.

This article reflects 2000 and we are using 2003 as well as 2010 in an 2003 exchange environment. I have been unable to reproduce this fact myself.

I do have a situation where a user sends an email from a 2003 client and in the subject they put COL:. Whoever replies to this message automatically replaces the COL: with RE: or if forwarding FWD:. This only happens to the messages that are sent from this specific client machine. I am unable to reproduce it from any other machine as the same sender. If I open the original message from different client machines and reply it replaces the prefix as well.
It is seems to stay with the message regardless of Outlook versions and is specific to the original client. Any ideas?

The article applies to all versions - although newer versions strip less and are less likely to remove 4 or more characters. I reported that bug but forget which version was the first to be fixed. Outlook 2000 was awful - it removed long words.

As a workaround, if the sender adds a space " COL: subject", it won't be removed.

COL should work (not be removed), especially when replying with Outlook 2007/2010. 2 and 3-characters are removed - at least if they end in E or W. It looks like they fixed it by redoing the code so it looks for 2 or 3 letters ending in E:, W: - TEE: is removed but COL: is not. (I didn't try D: but expect words ending in it will be removed too.)

Are the messages between exchange users or internet addresses? Is Outlook 2003 fully updated?

what language is windows set for on the problem computer? I wonder if words ending in L: are a removed in certain languages - I can't think of any language where *L: is used for RE or FW though.
