Hotmail set not to delete from other accounts, but did. Settings in Outlook?

My apologies if I have not posted to the correct area, but I thought it would be a connector issue. I checked settings within hotmail/live and it is set to not let emails be deleted off of hotmail server from other email programs. I went into Outlook on my laptop yesterday and cleaned out messages, cleaned the delete folder within Outlook and discovered all had been deleted from hotmail server. Are there settings within Outlook 2010 to ensure that this doesn't happen again? Thank you - I hadn't discovered any while looking around in settings and options areas.
