Different names for the same email address

My email comes and goes to Outlook 2010 64 bit via gmail using IMAP.

When emails display, showing from and/or to names, there are several variations for some names. Some will have the actual email address as the From or To name, others the name I gave that email address in gmail, and there are others (not sure where they came from).

When I add one of these variant names to Outlook contacts, and merge with an existing contact with the same email address, the From (or To) name on that particular email stays the same.

Is there a way of changing from and to names on emails so that they show the one name for the same email address?
