Firstly I am not able to import my outlook address book that I saved from another computer I have. Also when I go to write a new message, in that window under tools there is no link to my address book.

There was and still is on my old computer I still have in another room.

I do have some sort of address book there but is not accessible like my other installation of Outlook 2003 on my old computer.

I really like Outlook as an email client but it not very user friendly when handling address books.

Can someone please advice firstly which format do you save the old address book in from the old computer.

I may then at least have that correct.

Thanks for any help.

How did you save it from the old computer? What happens when you try to import?

If you copy the pst from the old computer and open in it outlook using File, Open, Outlook Data file, does it work?

tried a few different formats with no success....when I tried PST format I get a message saying "The message interface has returned an unknown error"

Seems I can't get that type of extension to work. The other ones I have used are the CSV one (always worked ok in Outlook Express when I had XP} and both the TXT options. Those ones import ok but the format is not correct. I have an address book at the moment but when you open it in the main Outlook window and double click an entry, nothing happens. In the othet old computer when I go...write a new message..the address book is there under Tools to open and double click. This new installation there is no addressbook there in the 'write a new message' that seems to be the problem. I am not importing it correctly or it just won't import.

Thanks for your help

Just tried the export of PST on this copy of outlook (new installation) and it works fine. looks like my old computer copy has fallen over....$%$# Do you think I could do a reinstall on my old computer and then it may export ok??

Now managed to import a CSV file into my contacts but they all have the SMTP extension after the email and I have to edit each one before I can use it. Address book still doesn't come up under 'Tools' in the 'Write' window.

A repair or reinstall of Office on the old computer might fix the problems, including the SMTP: address problem.

TNX I'll try that. Funny I also have Eudora on my new computer and it imported the address.csv file into it no trouble at all...without the SMTP additions.

I've seen the SMTP error before - it's either a bad install or a bad profile.

Yes well I just edited all my contacts and removed the SMTP part...very slow and painful....I now notice that I have to open contacts..bottom left and right click on the one I want to email and select "New message to contact". before all I had to do was select "New" and the write window opened and the address book was under "Tools" and then double click the contact. That is now not there anymore. Just have to learn the new way I suppose.

I prefer 2003 as there are less "bells and whistles" at the top and easier to follow.

You have Outlook 2003 on both computers?

So when you clicked the To button, the contacts came up in the Address book?

If you have Contacts in the Contacts folder but they are not accessible when you click on the To button, check these settings:

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is the box to enable as email address book is checked?

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed, add it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it and close then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

So when you clicked the To button, the contacts came up in the Address book?

No they don't unless I have already sent them an email (since creating the address book)

When I right click the contacts folder I do not get an option to view properties only these....Open in New Window....navigation Pane Options....

When I wen to tools email accounts and view existing directories...the address book is there. I removed it and re added it as you said, but still the same, when I click to "to" button I only get those ones I have sent mail to.

Switch ot the contact pane then right click....

Now I notice when I am in the New message window if I press Ctrl + Shift + B the address book pops up just fine and double clicking an address puts it straight into the "To" line.

How do I get that operation to show under Tools in the new message window.?

It shows ok in my old computer where I just found that method.

Which email editor are you using?

You can open the address book by clicking the To button or the Address book button on the email toolbar when using the Word editor.

Tools, Options, Mail Format to check if word is enabled as the editor.

Thanks for all your help Diane I am an old fool when it comes to this..... I never thought of clicking, right on, the word 'To' to open the address book...now I know.

All now up and running and thank you again for your patience.

Yeah, it would be better I it actually looked like a clickable button.

I now have a problem with the date on received mail.

It is showing at least a day earlier and the wrong time.

my computer has the date and time set correctly.

Sent one to myself to check and it came back as being received the day before with the wrong time....very strange
