I recently ran into a problem with the Outlook 2007 categories recently used flyout list. This happened after our exchange server had some issues. While my Outlook does show 15 of my categories in the flyout, they are static. They will not permanently update like they used to. If I categorize an email using a category not on the flyout, it will temporarily display the new category in the list, thus pushing one out, but only for the active session. Once Outlook is closed and reopened, the original 15 static categories are shown. Is there some registry key defining this or some way I can purge/reset them? I looked at clearing the MRU 3 key under

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Office Finder], but I don't have the key present. Not even sure this even relates to it.

Outlook 2007 and WIN7.

TIA,

Categories are in the data file now, not the registry, so the category key won't exist in Outlook 2007 and 2010. (The Finder key is for Advanced find MRU, not categories).

Try using the upgrade to color categories option and see if it helps. Right click on the mailbox or pst name and choose Properties, then click the upgrade button. The link includes a tutorial and screenshot, if you need it.

I don't know if it would help to use a /cleancategories switch then upgrade to color categories- the switch resets the category list to the default, so if you renamed Red Category etc, you'll need to rename them.

Open outlook with the /cleancategories switch:

Close Outlook. At the Start search field on Vista or Windows7 Start menu or in the Start menu, Run command (Windows key + R), type

outlook.exe /cleancategories

Then press Enter (or OK button) to restart Outlook.

Note: Make sure there is a space between the words. If you need to see a screenshot, command line switches has one.

Diane,

Thank you so much. The upgrade to color categories didn't work again. I actually tried that once before but gave it a go ahead anyhow, but got the same result. However the /cleanswitch appears to have worked. The MRU category list is now dynamic. The switch seems to have busted a lot of my categories. Many are not in the master category list anymore. Rebuilding those.

Thanks again.

Upgrade to color categories should work to restore all categories that are on items in the pst or mailbox. It can take some time to work as it goes through all of the items - i think it takes about 15 minutes here.
