Intermittent ability to send to single domain. "Connection refused"

When attempting to send mail to a particular domain, the firewall mail log returns "connection refused by" their smtp server. Occasionally a message will send through without a problem, the external domain can send to us no problem, the DSN in the mail log is returned as 4.0.0 deferred, and messages generally send about one day later from what I understand (however I have not personally verified this yet). I've double checked the queue length and there are no messages in the queue. The traffic is making it to their smtp servers and is being refused.




Any ideas on what I can check?

The admin at the other domain would have more information and his logs should say exactly why it was refused. But I'd start with checking the blacklists - make sure your smtp server isn't on it. Their server could be overloaded, your server could be too talkative and mistaken for a spammer.

Do you have spf records for your domain? If you use more than 1 smtp server, is there an spf record for each?
