I have been using Outlook 2021 on a Windows 11 laptop to access my outlook.com. account via a POP account setup, but it appears I now need to use an Exchange account setup instead, because outlook.com. now requires "Modern authentication".

Is there a way to add a new Exchange account setup in Outlook 2021 but to continue using the contacts and calendar in my existing PST file? (I don't need the contacts and calendar to be synced to outlook.com, as I only need to access them on my laptop.)

Correct.

Yes, you can use the pst - if it is not in the profile, add it using File > Open & Export > Open Outlook data file. It should work to auto-resolve contacts but if you want to see those contacts when you click To button, you need to set it in address book button (home ribbon) > Tools > Options.

If you only have the one account in your profile, the old pst file should be able to be set as default in File > Account Settings > Account Settings > Data file tab.

If Outlook won't let you set the pst as default, when you look in the Contacts (People) module, the last selected contacts should still be selected but will occasionally switch to the default contacts. Also, new contacts created when you are not in the contacts folder will go into the outlook.com contacts and need to be moved.

Thanks for your prompt and helpful reply.

Currently in Outlook 2021 I have just one profile with the one (default) PST file and one (default) POP account setup for accessing my outlook.com. email account.

Do I need (a) to remove the existing profile and add a new profile with a new Exchange account, and open/attach the old PST file, and set the address book option to use the existing contacts ... or can I (b) retain the existing profile and just remove the old POP account and add a new Exchange account? (Would this create a new OST file and leave the existing PST file attached and available for using the existing contacts and calendar, and viewing old emails downloaded via the old POP account?) Either way, it sounds like I need to have the PST file set as the default data file, is that correct?

No need to make a new profile- remove the pop account (outlook won't let you add an account twice) but don't remove the pst file. Add the Exchange account.

BTW - yes, it will create a new ost but keep the pst in as an archive file of sorts - with your calendar, contacts, and older email.

The pst doesn't need to be default, but if not, new calendar and contacts will default to the exchange folders and the to-do bar (if you use it) will show the calendar in the default data file.

Thanks again. I removed the old (POP) account and added a new (Exchange) account, and retained the existing PST file and set it as default for calendar and contacts, and it is all working fine.

One thing tripped me up at first: when I tried adding the new account outside Outlook (Control Panel > User Accounts > Mail), it didn't work, but when I tried inside Outlook (File > Account Settings), it did work.

Correct. The old method should work for pop and IMAP accounts that DO NOT use modern auth because it does not support modern auth (oAuth2) but will not work for outlook.com/Exchange, Gmail, or Yahoo. There might be other servers it won't work with... and gmail and yahoo will work if you use an app password.
