Problems with inline commenting in rich text replies

Q

Qu0ll

In Outlook 2007, whenever I reply to a rich text or HTML message the

original text is prefixed with a vertical blue line down the left margin.

This is OK but when I do inline commenting in my reply my inserted text is

also prefixed with this line and there's no way for the recipient to tell

what's mine and what's theirs. I know I can have Outlook insert my initials

but all I want is to be able to remove the blue line in front on my inserted

text. Can this be done?

And loving it,

-Qu0ll (Rare, not extinct)

Configure Outlook not to indent the original text upon forwarding/replying;

Tools-> Options-> button E-mail Options...

Thanks, but I do want to indent and tag the original text, I just want to be

able to embed comments inline without the blue line appearing on those

comments.

Because the blue line is used as the reply identifier on HTML formatted messages. If you convert the message to plain text, it won't appear.

For the specific problem faced by the original poster, using the option to "Mark my comments with" will solve the problem of replying inline and identifying who said what.

No, I'm sorry, that doesn't answer my question. Why is it not possible to have the text of the original email indented with a blue line, and new text unhighlighted between them? It's a rhetorical question, really: the correct answer is "because the Outlook development team decided that wasn't a useful feature". So let me rephrase it: why did they decide that? And while we're at it, why did they decide that the best plain-text representation of that blue line was ... nothing at all?

For the specific problem faced by the original poster, using the option to "Mark my comments with" will solve the problem of replying inline and identifying who said what.

That is NOT the problem the original poster faced. He specifically said "I know I can have Outlook insert my initials but all I want is to be able to remove the blue line in front on my inserted text". Possibly because, just like me, he finds the output of "Mark my comments with" illegible - not to say inconsistent with expected behaviour on most mailing lists.

I'm just trolling, really, but it's hands-down the single worst thing about Outlook for me, and god knows, there's a few to choose from...

I have no idea why they designed it like they did - they haven't said. If you want to know, you'll need to call them. My best guess is that it has to do with using word as the editor and how it handles HTML, although the outlook editor worked the same.

If I recall correctly, switching from html to plain text doesn't add quote indicators because you switched format after hitting reply. If you switch the format then hit reply, it will use your quote prefix (usually >). It's been forever since i tested it though - i prefer the quote format that does not add any quote prefix. When i reply inline and trim, i put >>> at the begining and end of each block of quoted text to set it apart from my comments.
