Outlook 2010 won't use a view other than maximized

I am using Outlook 2010. I am connected to an Exchange server. I like to keep multiple windows open with different things. On Windows 7, I prefer to snap windows to the right and left side but I cannot with Outlook 2010. If I click the "restore down" button the window disappears. The only way to get the window back (the preview window even gives up) is to right click on that one and tell it to maximize. I can use the window full screen but cannot use the "non-full screen" views. I am thinking there should be something easy to fix this but don't know where to begin. It is not checked to "hide when minimized" which seems to be the only answer I have seen for a similar problem. I have experienced this on 2 or 3 different computers with Outlook 2010 recently.
 
So the button is on the taskbar but the window is missing when you try to switch from maximized to non-maximized window (which is not the same as minimized). This usually means the window is off the screen - if outlook is the only app open, right click on the task bar and use the tile, cascade, or stacked option. (I've had people say only cascade fixed it, but I'm never sure if its windows or a user error. :) )
