Can Word Normal.dotm interfere with Outlook? Office 2016

At work, my Outlook 2016 32-bit [on my Win 10 Pro 64-bit (v 1903)] has problems, and my IT guys say they probably stem from the custom Normal.dotm I have in Word.

In Outlook, my Auto-Complete stopped working - when I start typing names in To or cc, Outlook does not complete them as it used to do. However, it WILL send emails with my typed partial names if they start out correctly - it just won’t show me the Auto-Complete.

If I start Outlook with Win+R as outlook.exe /safe, Auto-Complete works normally, but I can no longer double-click on a From or To name in a received email and see the underlying address, etc.

My IT guys - whom I torture enough - think my custom Normal.dotm in Word might be the culprit. Its genesis is Word 2003 from another firm, and I have a lot of customizations in it. Yes, the original normal.dot from Word 2003 was “Converted” to be usable in Word 2016 as Normal.dotm. FYI - yesterday, I hid my Normal.dotm, reinstated the default Normal.dotm and rebooted, but Outlook still had the problems I am describing.

One more clue - whenever I close (exit) Word, Excel or Outlook, its process continues to run in Task Manager. The process(es) won’t stop unless I “End” them manually or reboot.

And another clue - Diane's interesting suggestion on this forum at < THIS LINK > does not help.

Yes, I have tried all the basic things to fix the Auto-Complete issue, like turning it off and on in Options and even clearing it. (But I am on Exchange.)

Why do you think I am having this Auto-Complete problem in Outlook, and how to fix???

I don't think the template is the cause.

whenever I close (exit) Word, Excel or Outlook, its process continues to run in Task Manager.
This happens with all 3 apps? Outlook may do this if you have an IMAP account in your profile.

However, it WILL send emails with my typed partial names if they start out correctly - it just won’t show me the Auto-Complete.
That is the auto resolve feature (automatic name checking in Options).

Do you have autocomplete enabled? Have you tried Emptying autocomplete? If you don't want to lose the entries, make a backup of the autocomplete file in %localappdata%\microsoft\outlook\RoamCache - you should be able to restore it later, but if not, get Nk2Edit from nirsoft.net to merge the old file into the new.

You may want to repair office too.

Diane - you asked, "Do you have autocomplete enabled? Have you tried Emptying autocomplete?"

Yes, and yes. And it still doesn't work. That's why this one is a toughy. By the way, I'm connected to Exchange, and I have the impression that "emptying autocomplete" doesn't actually do anything locally. I think Outlook on my PC pulls everything in from Exchange anyway.

Is it a question of maybe having too many entries in Auto-complete? But then why does it work in outlook.exe / safe?

Thanks.

Since it works in Safe mode, a good test would seem to be to disable all your Add-ins.

Vincenzo - thanks. Dumb question, but how to do that exactly? I ask because I seem to get to different places when I check my add-ins.

Also, I'm not sure I can do that on a company PC - probably locked down by IT.

And (a) no one else is complaining about this even though I'm pretty sure we all have the same add-ins., and (b) why in safe mode (when auto-complete works) am I unable to double-click on a From, To or cc name and see the underlying info?

File > Options > Addins - what non-Microsoft addins are listed?

Web and desktop have separate autocompletes. Too many entries shouldn't be a problem - outlook limits it to 1000.
