I would very much like to know if someone has found a way to do this. I only have two users who were recently upgraded to Outlook 2007 and BCM 2007 and on both when I try to connect to teh BCM2003 shared database I receive the following error:

"Cannot access the database server on computer WS1101."

Can anyone help with this issue? Thanks Don

Thanks guys.

wonder if someone could help me on this ..

i have a setup of 6 PC's with Outlook 2003 with BCM.

The server is also with BCM 2003.

4 PC's on the site have 2003 and they connect to the server database without

any problem.

However there are 2 machines with Outlook 2007 which BCM 2007, which

connects ok through the command prompt. (osql -E -S

SSAPC01\microsoftsmlbiz,56183) returns 1>.

However BCM 2007 does not connect to the DB.

(does anything need to be change to make it backward compatible ?)

Could you please help ?

Many Thanks .

BCM for Outlook 2003?

Thanks,

Hi Lynn,

What kind of goal are you trying to achieve with this "backward

compatible" ability that you are asking?

If you want Business Contact Manager 2007 to be able to pick up BCM

2003 database so you can make the most out of the 2007 functionality,

then yes, you can do this smoothly as of today. (from 2007) Business

Contact Manager menu > Database Tools > Create or select a database...

If you want BCM 2007 to pick up BCM 2003 data, you can export data

from 2003 and import that to 2007. (from 2007) Business Contact

Manager menu > Database Tools > Import and Export...

If you want a BCM 2003 client to connect to a shared BCM 2007

database, then I would say sorry -- you would need to get both (or

all) clients up to the same version (2007) for them to run together.

If you are referring to something else, please do let me know. I will

answer you to the best of what I can.

Hope that helps,

John Huang [MSFT]

Can BCM 2003 import data from BCM 2007?

I've tried exporting 2007 .bcm data and importing into 2003 and receive an

error "Wrong Version."

Exporting the 2007 BCM contacts to a .pst file and then importing to the

2003 BCM contacts results in numerous duplicates of the same contact, (and

every contact) even if I delete the 2003 BCM contacts first (essentially

importing into an empty BCM contact list).

Any suggestions on accomplishing this task?

Hi Don,

If these users are running on Windows Vista or Windows 7, try

elevating Outlook process with Administrator privilege. Once Outlook

is run as administrator, try to go through BCM database migration

again.

To run Outlook as an administrator:

1. Search for "Outlook.exe" on your computer, either in Windows

Explorer or from Vista / Win7's Start Menu search box

2. Right-click on Outlook.exe and select "Run as administrator"

Please let me know if that helps resolve the problem.

Hope that helps,

John

John, I found your answer elsewhere. We are running Windows XP Professional not Vista or Windows 7. Only two machines are currently running Office 2007, the rest are still on Office 2003.

I have checked to make sure the right ports are open and available. I can connect to the shared machine but not to the shared database.

I am now trying to get the BCM 2003 contact exported and will just put them local on the two machines that Office 2007 until we get everyone updated later this year then periodically redo the export/import to keep them in synch with the shared database.

Hmm. Sorry. Each version of BCM is supported to work with its

matching version of BCM -- not greater, and not less. So that means

BCM 2003 clients can connect to database hosted by BCM 2003, BCM 2007

clients to BCM 2007 database, and BCM 2010 clients to BCM 2010

databases. There is a database version (schema version) that's set

within each database, and if the version mismatches, BCM can't

connect.

Your current way of periodicaly importing / exporting seems to work

until all BCM clients are on the same version, but it is a lot of

manual labor. If you can write two simple scripts that (1) backs up

data and (2) import data, and have Windows schedule nightly tasks on

your Office 2003 and Office 2007 PCs, that might save you on the

manual labor part... but I don't know which one is going to be more

expensive for you -- writing the scripts or doing this manually.

John
