Understanding folders in Outlook 2010

I am trying to clean up my outlook account (which I need to do as I am close to reaching full capacity on my remote back-up service), but do not understand some of the folders.

There is a folder called '[Google mail]', which I have not created. I do not have a Google Mail account, as far as I am aware. However, within this folder, there is a sub-folder 'All Mail' into which it appears that everything gets dumped and a sub-folder 'Sent Mail' into which all of my sent items go. Under the 'Outlook Data File' heading, there is a folder 'Sent Items', but sent items do not go there.

I have tried to 'Delete All' from the 'All Mail' folder, but this causes the whole thing to go to 'Not Responding'. Trying to empty my 'Deleted Items' folder (which holds the exact same number of unread items as the 'All Mail' folder - coincidence?) has the same effect.

Also, 'Send/Receive' seems to be constantly trying to synchronize sub-folders without ever completing the task.

What email accounts are in your profile? That pst file belongs to a gmail or google apps account that is configured in your profile as an IMAP account.

You can (and probably should) unsubscribe from the All mail folder - everything is repeated in the other folders.

Right click on any one of the folders within that pst and choose IMAP folders... from the menu. Click Query then look on the Subscribed tab. Select All mail and unsubscribe.

BTW- do not delete from all mail - delete from the other folders then when you sync, google will remove the mail from all mail automatically.

Not sure why it seems stuck on syncing - but start with not syncing all mail and see how it is. If you have a lot of mail that step along will cut down on the amount of items it needs to sync.
 
Thanks, Diane - that seems to have got rid of the 'All Mail' folder. However, it has also got rid of the other folders under [Google Mail], including the 'Sent Mail' folder. Where will my sent items be saved to now (they are still not going to the 'Sent Items' folder).

As regards the email accounts in my profile, how do I find these? As far as I am aware there should only be my main account - nige.platt@blueyonder.co.uk
 
Removing just that all mail folder i have circled should not remove the other folders - that was the only folder not in my list when i resubbed it for the screenshot.

Go to File, Account Settings - look on the Email tab for the accounts in your profile. An IMAP account uses the google servers. I'm assuming its the blueyonder account - i think Virgin switched to gmail a couple of years ago. (Many isps use Hotmail, gmail, or yahoo for email).
 
Hi Diane. The other folders have miraculously re-appeared. Also, the synchronizing problem seems to have been resolved. I'm not usually an emoticon sort of chap but :o. Many thanks for your help.
