Contacts disappear in public folder search

Outlook 2013 latest patches.
When doing a search in a public folder with contacts the contacts disappear from the search results after clicking on another contact. The unread count also decrements at the same time as the contact disappears.

Any ideas? It's driving my client and me crazy.
 
Well, you are apparently marking them read when you click off. Is the search for unread items?

To change the reading pane settings, go to View tab, Reading pane, Options. Not marking items read when you change selection should help.
