Single Quotes sometimes around e-mail addresses

I have Outlook 2003 SP3

Sometimes when the Sent message is stored in a folder the name has single

quote marks around it. Sometimes it does not. The problem is that when I

sort the names alphabetically, they are in two different groups.

The e-mails go through - this is only a display problem.

This ONLY happens with e-mail sent outside the company, not on internal mail

messages.

This happens on new messages, FW messages, and RE messages. Sometimes the

single quotes are there, sometimes not.

This happens with names that are in the Contact list or names that are not -

sometimes with single quotes, sometimes not.

The address type-ahead list does not have any names with single quotes.

This happens with many different e-mail addressees from many different

domains.

IS there a way to make the alphabetization ignore the leading single quote ?

That would solve my problem.

No there is no way to ignore the ' when sorting.

Ms. Poremsky,

I find it a bit troubling that your answer is so narrow and dry. I think

there is a real issue here and it has nothing to do with Outlook's inablity

to ignore single quotes when sorting. The real problem is the fact that

Outlook adds those single quotes in the first place. This Outlook behavior

makes it very difficult to find emails when sorting alphabetically in Sent

Items. If I send to Joe@abc.com, I have to look through two sets of emails

before I find what I am looking for. This reduces confidence in my system

and forces me to spend more time in retiriving what I am looking for. The

very opposite affect that I believe Microsoft Outlook is intending to create.

If you can help, please do. If not, perhaps there is someone else whom you

know that can.

Regards,

Jason

Your post is very well written. Have you been able to resolve this issue?

My response may be narrow and dry but it happens to be the truth and answers

the question that was asked. He didn't ask why outlook did it or how to

prevent it (another narrow, dry answer: No, you can't prevent it.)

Advanced find will ignore the ' if you search for the display name, as will

Instant search. It's easier to find a message to a specific person using

search, rather than sort.

Diane - I've got a similar problem. The quotes are added to e-mail addresses

(not listed in their contacts) when the replying. Example: editor@msn.com

turns into "editor"@msn.com. Is this just Outlook trying to assign that

friendly name? How could a sender format their name to avoid the quotes being

added when someone replies? Thanks!

so it doesn't appear that one of the questions was ever answered.

is there a way to keep outlook from adding the quotations in the first place? why do they get added? (this happens in Outlook 2003 but not in Outlook 2000.)

No, you can't prevent it. I don't recall the full explanation offhand, it has to do with encoding and the mail server.
