In Outlook.com >>> in People >>> what is the maximum number of contacts that People will hold?

In Outlook.com >>> in People >>> in a single contact >>> what is the maximum number of characters (including spaces) that the Notes field will hold?

I ask because I wonder if Microsoft has recently changed these limits. Thanks for your help.

Yes, they changed the limit a year or so ago when Outlook.com moved to office 365 hosting. It's now on Exchange server and subject to Exchange limits. You can theoretically have an unlimited number of contacts, but practical limit is s0mewhere between 10000 and 20,000 or so, only because the more you have, accessing the folder is slower. The limit is based on your patience. :)

Notes are basically unlimited - there probably is a limit, but it is huge, probably based on file size, not character count. Bigger = slower syncing, plus smartphone apps may have a limit to the number they can display.

your mailbox quota will affect the total size of your mailbox, which can affect the # of contacts your mailbox supports - if you have an office 365 personal or home subscription, you'll have a 50 gb mailbox if you use an outook.com address. non-subscribers have 5GB.

Hi Diane. Thanks. Your info is promising. But... MS is telling me that in Outlook.com >>> in People >>> the limit is 1,500 Contacts. They are also telling me that in Outlook.com >>> in People >>> in a single Contact >>> the Notes field is limited to 1,024 characters.

I want to use Outlook.com People, but I can't risk losing some of my Contacts (I have 2,023) nor the information in my Notes fields (many are longer than 1,024 characters). I know you're heavily involved and very knowledgeable... and I'm not challenging your information. But, do you have a third-party proof source on these topics? I just want to make sure before I take the leap.

I will triple check and make sure they didn't do something stupid to the accounts when they moved them... but those were the old limits, on the old server. Whoever told you that is using old information.

On the old server, only 1024 synced up/were visible online, while the notes remained in Outlook. I don't recall if they were only in the client they were added to or also synced to other computers... but it doesn't matter as that server is no longer in use.

I imported 6074 contacts on a different computer, added some text copied from a new article and created a profile on a different computer. The character count in outlook is 1523, but I'm not sure if it counts the underlying hyperlink code, which is shown as plain text in the people/ contact card view (but formatted in an open contact) - so the count could be higher.

Did you log in using a browser? And then go to People, and then check the 6,075 count? Were all 6,075 there?

Ditto for the 1,523 character count in the Notes field?

In my free @outlook.com account, I have a Contact that contains 5,689 characters (including spaces) in the Notes field. I've had it this way for about 60-days. When looking at it in a browser, it has yet to be truncated to 1,024 by Microsoft. Even though MS hasn't truncated it, I don't fully trust that they won't truncate it someday. Ditto for my paid @live.com account (Office 365 Home subscription) which has a Contact with 6,629 characters (including spaces) in the Notes field. I don't yet trust MS.

I haven't (yet) tested the 1,500 Contacts limit. Your 6,075 test is interesting (and encouraging). This morning, MS people are still telling me that the 1,500 and 1,024 limits exist. What to do?

Ignore them, tell them they are wrong... ask them if this is for the new server or the old server.

How did you contact them? I'll tell my support contact that they are giving out bad info.

I logged in at login.live.com. This takes me to my "web based email" per se, which is now outlook.live.com/owa. Click on the "?" at the top right. Then click on "Help." This opens a window called "Contact Support."

Did they give you a case (or ticket number) number? If so, my contact will do a little re-education. :) He said its documented internally so the person should have had the correct information available.
