Send/Receive error in Outlook 2007

Running Win 7 Home Premium. I leave my PC for a couple of hours with the internet connection still active, come home and click on MailWasher to retrieve my emails and then try to download them to Outlook but am told 'Send/Receive error', if I close Outlook and then re-open it it works perfectly. I run Norton 360 as well. Is this a setting I have missed in Outlook.

I'm guessing it has something to do with a lock on the mailbox - when a pop client checks mail, it (or the server) sets a lock which blocks out other email clients while the first is doing a send /receive.




Does the error say more than 'send / receive error' ?
 
Thank you Diane for your help. I waited until it happened again and looked at the Error message which had the reference Error 0x800300FD I googled that and the two reasons given were, 1. The TEMP folders were full, I emptied them with CCleaner and 2. Email in and out scanners could be the cause, I disabled but made no difference also I closed MailWasher but still made no difference.
