not the preview.

try opening a custom contact form. or using developer tab, open the native contact form, click design this form and see what happens to phone and email labels.

Do you get support incidents with your TechNet or MSDN subscription? You might get better results from them.

whoops, sorry diane. i had just posted to technet forums (ms chat, which i tried after being disconnected from ms live tech, gave me several dead end leads about filing a bug report, before sending me to technet forum), about the problem and about creating a bug report. right after that, i rec'd your response, signed only as admin. i assumed that it was from technet and replied.

i think that i have put far too much time, installing, uninstalling, experimenting with various forms, writing forums, etc, etc. into this issue, for software that i am at this point only trying out. this is microsofts problem, and they have never cared much about users and the problems with their software. so, i am about done with this, short of something that will really lead to a solution with minimum further use of my time. thanks for your efforts regarding this bug, but this isn't your problem either, except for the people that may be writing to ask about why their custom forms are not working any more.

They have a chat? I wonder if they have quality engineers staffing it... that is one problem with trying to get help in the public forums - the quality of the support staff is poor - some of the staff is outsourced and really do not know the product.

In any event, I know it will take longer than a few weeks to get this fixed. After the holidays I'll check back with my support contact (he's on vacation, like many of the MS staff - they all take the last 2 weeks of the year off).

the person on other end of chat did take the time to come up with a few options for making the problem known, short of an actual bug report, which he (based on the probably fake name) was unable to do himself. some of the options were places that i had already visited, such as the ms bug and suggestion site, that didn't take comments about office, even though office was in the list of software.

i will be waiting, and interested, to hear what you may find out about any plan to fix the problem. one might think that a company producing software for businesses, selling a new version, that has a flaw in a feature that mostly businesses would use, would be extremely anxious to fix it. in fact, they should give me a free copy for having found the bug and spending so much time trying to let them know about it. but then....
in the meantime: have a good week/vacation(?).

Diane, have you heard anything from ms about the contact form issue? btw: i did use your link to get office 365. it has the same problem with custom form.

i would like to be using office 2013, but not being able to use my contacts makes it impossible.

jeffrey

Yeah, i expect it will be months before it's fixed. I don't think custom forms are something they want to get rid of, but they prefer developing with forms regions.

The only way i know to deal with it is by not editing page1.

today i had time to do some reading about forms regions. doesn't seem very different from what i was doing (as i remember, it was years ago that i designed the current form). i reinstalled of13, opened outlook>developer>design a form , and took a look at phonelabel fields properties. even when i changed the caption from "e-mail 3" to "business" it wouldn't change on the form. when i closed the form it asked if i wanted to save the changed regions. so, apparently it thinks that i am working in regions. and won't allow changes to it's mislabeling.

i wonder how much longer it will be before ms fixes the problem? or, how complicated it will be for me to learn to design a new form region that looks like the one that i have, make it page one for contact form, get rid of the native page one, and get outlook to use the new form. ?? primarily, on contact form page one, mostly i would like to remove the business card, and move notes field to bottom of page.

i just rec'd a link from someone at msdn, How to: Create an Outlook Form . a ms page that talks about customizing the 2013 contact page, including customizing the first, general, page. and how to access customization, precisely how i have been doing it. it also mentions form regions as an option. so, apparently, one department or group at ms thinks that customization is ok. perhaps they could get the programmers to make it work.

Forms regions is the recommended method of customizing forms in versions that support FR. They aren't quite as easy to distribute as they include a file + the form. Old fashioned custom forms can be published in org forms, in a pst, in a folder, and it moves with the mailbox or data file.

Has Microsoft come out with a fix for this?

It's so easy to reproduce.

1) Open Outlook 2013

2) Customize the Ribbon...

3) Check on the Developer Tab

4) Design a Form

5) Select Contact out of Standard Forms Library

Notice that in the Phone selection fields it says

"E-mail3", (When is an email a phone number?)

"Business",

"Other Fax" and

"Home"

Under all previous versions of Outlook, it was

"Business"

"Home"

"Business Fax"

"Mobile"

Come on Microsoft get a Hot Fix for this! It's stopping our rollout of Office 2013.

As of right now, no. The workaround is to remove those fields and add them back individually. The works if you everyone uses the same fields - the other phone fields are in All Fields but not exposed on the first page. Same for email - if you only need email1 showing, add it. (This method 'hard codes' which fields display)

Hmmm. I think I know how to fix it... delete the first wrong field label, hit undo... rinse, repeat. the Email label errors when you run form after 1 delete, so you need to delete, undo, delete.

In really quickie testing, it looks like the fields are correct.

If those steps make no sense - see fix-custom-form - dicot's library
