I have run into a few weird things I thought I would share. When I install Outlook 2013 on Windows 7 the Desktop Alert settings button is present in Options | Mail | When New Messages Arrive panel. The alert is customizable just as in 2010 and shows up in the lower right hand corner of the screen. However if I install Outlook on Windows 8 that button is missing and the alert, which is now not customizable, shows up in the upper right hand corner. I was not puzzled by the latter behavior because I thought that was the design in Outlook 2013. What does puzzle me is why it works the old way, the way I like, in Windows 7. Hmmm, I can't enter a new paragraph here. The second puzzlement is that when I install Outlook 2013 on a computer that does not have Windows search installed, I get a message each time I start Outlook that says Outlook is completing the install of Office 2013 64-bit components. If I then install Windows search that message goes away. Now I didn't expect Microsoft to hit me across the face with a dead fish and yell "Install Windows Search, dummy". But it would have been nice to get a message such as "Windows search not installed/running". That is my contribution for the day.

The paragraph thingy: click the AA button in the left corner - that should let you enter paras.

Desktop alert: it's windows 8. The OS took over all of the alerts.

You get the search not installed alert in 2010 and 2007, but they install on winxp, which did not include search by default. Windows 7 & 8 includes search in a default install so outlook assumes its installed.

Thanks, that clears up a lot. So Outlook passes the alert request to Windows and Windows puts the alert message wherever it wants. Too bad Outlook can't pass a location parameter.

I wish it was a "Search not installed" alert. It took me a while to determine that the "installing 64-bit components" message was very misleading and Windows search was the real problem. FYI, I was testing it on Server 2012 and that is why Windows search was not installed.
