iCloud addresses don't show up in "Address Book" or "To:"

Weird one. Or, it looks weird to me.

I have my iCloud contacts configured as the only address book in Outlook 2007. I previously had it syncing with the Outlook address book but that didn't work so well and I decided it was a waste of time, effort, and storage space ;-) so now it's just the iCloud address book and it works fine.

My iCloud contacts are syncing with my iPhone; Outlook lists them all if I select "Contacts" at the bottom left; and when composing new emails, if I type a name or address that is not in the .nk2 cache it looks up and successfully finds the right contact in the iCloud address book.

Weirdness comes in when I click the "Address Book" button in the standard toolbar, or the "To:" button in a new mail: both show me an empty address book.

In Address Book (shift-ctrl-B) Tools - Options I have iCloud in the top two boxes (Show this address list first and Keep personal addresses in) and the only option in the third (When sending, check names in these lists).

In Outlook's Account settings - Address Books there is only one option listed: Outlook Address Book, shown as type MAPI (which means it must be the iCloud address book, because that't the only MAPI account I have). But there are no options to change anything about this, or add any other address books.

Also from the main Outlook screen, selecting Contacts then right-clicking "Contacts in iCloud" then Properties, I do have the option selected for "Show this folder as an e-mail address book" and its name is "iCloud".

So it's not the end of the world that it doesn't work exactly as expected, but it can be a major annoyance to have to switch to a different screen to look up an address that should be accessible from within an email. Also it means I can't compile or edit mailing lists. Anyone with any ideas? Or is this an iCloud limitation?

So the Contacts folder under icloud is enabled as an address book but not showing up in the address book when you click the To button?

In Account Settings, you should only have the OAB - the icloud will be part of the OAB. The important settings in having the folder enabled as an address book (right-click on the contacts folder, choose Properties, then Outlook Address Book tab.)

Go to the folder list - Ctrl+6 will get you there - and see where the 'Contacts in iCloud' folder is. It sounds like it's might be a folder in your Outlook data file, not in the icloud data file - the icloud Contacts should be listed as "Contacts - iCloud"

Yes, enabled as an address book, but showing as an empty address book when I click the To button

Yep, that's how it is.

Nope - there it is under iCloud. And there are all my contacts:

But...

***Incidentally I just discovered (because I just thought of it) that if I type in search terms in here I can see the selected subset of contacts. But I can't type in "*" to display them all - just gives the Windows general error sound.

Oh no...

If I select (.) Name only I get all my contacts listed

Why isn't that the default???

Gaaaaahhhhh I just wasted your time and mine

Name is supposed to be Default but if you ever select More Columns, it sticks till you change it.

It's not a waste of my time - its a common problem and this might help someone else. :)
