IMAP calendars in New Outlook

So, I noticed that in the new Outlook, IMAP calendars automatically get a local calendar, and you can set up categories locally. The problem? This does not synchronize back to a server and then to a mobile app (I checked).

Also, when I try to create an event from an IMAP email, it will save the event to the local calendar only; there is no option to save to the default calendar while making it or after saving it.

I do not understand why Microsoft thought this was a clever idea. I only hope that they plan to add native Caldav support.
 
Your observations are correct. If the account is gmail, yahoo, or iCloud the calendar & contacts will sync back. The Microsoft cloud service uses an API to sync to those servers. It doesnt sync to other servers - they use caldav.

I'll double check, but new events from email should go into the calendar in that account - unless an update changed it. I'll check when i'm back on my desktop. (I'm on my macbook this morning.)
 
If the message is in the IMAP mailbox, it should go on that calendar. Tasks (to-do) arent aren't supported in imap.

I dragged the email to the calendar pane - if you don't see them after creating, click the 3 dots on the upper right and choose the IMAP calendar. (and turn off other calendars)

Any idea if there is a way to create an event in my default Outlook.com calendar since that will synchronize back to the server and my mobile app? This is not useful unless they add native generic CalDAV support.

I need events in a calendar that syncs everywhere, not just on my desktop.

Why can't they accommodate generic CalDAV and CardDAV?

Who knows... It's been an "ask" for 20+ years.

You can open the calendar and create it - or move it to the other calendar.
