"Has anyone ever tried merging their Outlook schedule with someone else’s just to make sure they’re free for a spontaneous coffee run, a weekend hike, or an impromptu museum visit? How do you balance work commitments with leaving room for the unexpected?"
 
You don't want to actually merge the calendars, but if you have an export of their calendar or it is an exchange calendar and shared with you, Outlook will let you overlay the calendars so you can see when both are free.

Select (check) 2 in Outlook's calendar list then if side by side, click the arrow (classic Outlook) or Split view in new Outlook and Outlook on the web.
