Can't sync outlook with Palm Centro

I had been succesfully synching my Palm Centro with Outlook for some time but for some reason in February it stopped working. I get an error message in the log that it is unable to initialize outlook and that I need to use detect and repair. My version of Outlook doesn't have detect and repair but I have done the office diagnostics with no problems found. I chatted with a Microsoft support person some time ago who said he was confident that I just needed to uninstall and reinstall Palm Desktop but I did that and it still does not work. Please help?!? It is useless if I can't have my calendar, tasks and contacts updated on my Palm and vice versa. And because I have Windows 7 I can't even sync Outlook with Google Calendar to be able to retrieve it from the web.
 
Have you scanned your pst-file for errors already with scanpst.exe?

Corruptions in this file could lead to synchronization issues.

I have had this problem from time to time syncing over USB to Windows PC (in my case Win XP) -- I usually could resolve it by doing one or more of the following:

  • Ensure Hot Sync Manager is running on the desktop. If not, start up Palm Desktop and click HotSync button to start.
  • Go to Control Panel, Add New Hardware. While connected via USB once the PC attempts to discover connected devices it may start recognizing my Centro (as acknowledged by the tell-tale two-tone beep). If asked to identify device, scroll down to and select Palm Handlheld.
  • When all else fails, disconnect then try a different USB port -- for some reason sometimes this resolves the issue.
  • At least once I had to re-install the Palm Desktop software before sync would start working again.
